Rising Chinese race driver Gerrard Xie will be stepping up to the 2025 Formula 3 season with Hitech Grand Prix, promoted from their GB3 team after an impressive 2024 season. Xie’s debut in the 2025 FIA Formula 3 Championship will kick off on March 14, 2025 at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, the season opener of the Formula 1 season.
Entering Formula 3 is the latest of a series of achievements by the young Chinese driving talent which has seen a rapid rise up the Formula 1 ladder. The highlight for the teenager was at the Hungarian leg of the 2024 GB3 Championship with a double pole position and race victory, wrapping up the season with a total of 3 podium finishes. This rides from his success in the 2024 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship (FROC) in New Zealand, where he also achieved a pole position at Hampton Downs and a race victory in Taupo.
Combined with thirteen consecutive race wins in the 2022 Chinese Formula 4 season, along with four wins in the 2022 Formula Renault Zhuzhou Super Challenge Cup and a second place finish in the 69th Macau Grand Prix in Formula 4 machinery. Xie has demonstrated his continued growth as a driver, earning his place on the prestigious Formula 3 grid.
Xie began his career in karting, where he achieved his first championship victory at 9 years old in 2015. He then went on to participate in multiple karting championships in Shenzhen, Guangdong, and Macau between 2016 to 2020. The Chinese driver aims to follow the footsteps of Zhou Guanyu, who currently competes in Formula 1 for Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber.
The 18-year old driver hailing from China’s Greater Bay Area will continue the relationship with his current team, Hitech Grand Prix. Notable racing talents that have previously driven for the Hitech Grand Prix team include current Formula 1 drivers George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, Liam Lawson, and Alex Albon.
Preparation for the 2025 season began earlier this month, with F3 testing in Spain, with two days held on October 8-9 in Jerez and two days in Barcelona on October 15-16. The first rounds of F3 testing have been productive for Xie, who has focused all his efforts on understanding the current generation FIA Formula 3 car, before a swap to the all new Formula 3 car coming for next season. As 2025 draws closer, he continues to focus on improving and learning in order to start the season with a strong performance in Melbourne.
